Welcome to Mechanical Seal Fundamentals – From Principles to Applications. My name is Paul Xuereb and I have over 47 years of experience working with mechanical seals across the oil and gas, chemical, petrochemical, mining, power generation, and general industrial sectors.

Throughout this course, I'll share not only the engineering principles behind mechanical seals but also the practical knowledge, lessons learned, and real-life case studies I've gained throughout my career. My goal is to help you build the confidence to understand, select, install, operate, and troubleshoot mechanical seals in real industrial applications.

Learn how mechanical seals work, how to select the right seal, and how to improve equipment reliability through proper installation and maintenance. Covers seal design, materials, API seal support systems, troubleshooting, failure analysis, and proven industry best practices.

Keeping process fluids safely inside pumping equipment is one of the main jobs a mechanical sealing system has to do. Even tiny amounts of leakage can add up to real problems, whether that's lost money, environmental harm, or safety risks, and this becomes especially true when the fluids involved are hazardous, toxic, or expensive.

That's why mechanical seals are built to act as engineered barriers that hold leakage down to negligible amounts under the conditions they're designed for. By doing this well, they help keep the process running cleanly, cut down on wasted product, and make it easier to stay on the right side of environmental and safety rules.

  • Develop an understanding of the various mechanical seal types, including single, dual, slurry seals, dry gas seals and their appropriate applications and supporting systems.
  • Learn how to improve mechanical seal reliability by applying API seal flush piping plans to provide effective cooling, and environmental control.
  • Understand the principles of seal face lapping and how insufficient lapping affects seal performance, reliability, and service life.
  • Identify mechanical seal failure modes, perform root cause analysis, and apply corrective actions to maximise reliability and extend equipment operating life.
